From 1 July 2026, new requirements relating to the sharing of diagnostic imaging reports through My Health Record will commence as part of the Australian Government’s Better and Faster Access to Health Information initiative.
The reforms are intended to improve access to important health information and support more connected care across Australia’s healthcare system. Under the changes, eligible diagnostic imaging and pathology providers will generally be required to upload reports to My Health Record by default, unless a recognised exception applies or an approved extension has been granted. The requirements relate to written reports and not diagnostic images themselves.
The changes are expected to improve the availability of diagnostic information for patients and healthcare providers involved in a person’s care. Existing pathways for referring healthcare practitioners to receive diagnostic imaging reports will continue to operate alongside My Health Record.
An important change for patients is the adjustment to report access timeframes. From 1 July, some reports will become available to patients sooner through My Health Record, supporting more timely access to their health information.
Healthcare providers, diagnostic imaging services and practice owners are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new requirements and review information provided by the Australian Digital Health Agency.
