Neurorehabilitation

The Neurorehabilitation Clinical Practice Group was established to meet the growing enthusiasm from chiropractors, and to stay up-to-date with the latest research and development in the field of Neurorehabilitation.

This group aims to serve chiropractors with an interest in clinical neuroscience and to advance evidence-based practice, education, advocacy and research. Members of the Neurorehabilitation CPG are empowered to promote optimal recovery and quality of life in individuals with neurological and physical impairment due to neuromusculoskeletal and brain-based injury and disease.

This includes (but is not limited to) the co- management of stroke, neurodegenerative disease, spinal cord injuries, balance and vestibular disorders, brain injury, chronic limb, spinal and head pain syndromes.

Vision

Chiropractic is a dynamic and integral healthcare provider for patients with brain-based and neuro-MSK (nMSK) conditions.

Mission

  • Promote and facilitate continuing education for chiropractors in the field of clinical neuroscience with knowledge translation and skill acquisition.
  • To broaden the use of neurorehabilitation and brain-based therapies for patients with neuromusculoskeletal (nMSK) and neurological conditions.
  • To promote and facilitate improvements in best practice standards for chiropractors in the field of clinical neuroscience. This will include standardisation documents on the utilisation of various modalities and techniques in both assessment and management.
  • Develop risk management policies, guidelines and procedures that protect the patients, the practitioners and the profession.
  • Assist the public and profession in identifying those chiropractors suitably trained in the field of neuroscience.
  • Advocate and represent chiropractors with regulatory bodies and policy makers.
  • Support chiropractors and tertiary institutions in related research to show efficacy and effectiveness of chiropractic with n-MSK and brain-based conditions.

Scope of Practice

A neurorehabilitation chiropractor focuses on managing patients with a range of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions, symptoms and/or dysfunction. They are committed to providing an evidence-based, patient-centric, interprofessional and collaborative approach to neurologically based chiropractic care.

A neurorehabilitation chiropractor’s training is competency-based in the latest clinical neuroscience and includes the use of non-pharmaceutical, non-surgical interventions that leverage the principles of neuroplasticity. They utilise a range of therapies including (but not limited to) manual and proprioceptive therapies, neuromodulation, brain-based exercises, vestibular/balance and visual exercises, cognitive exercises, nutritional advice, amongst others. The aim is to restore and/or improve neurological function and reduce symptoms with tailored care with the patient’s goals in mind.

They endorse a multidisciplinary team approach, which includes working closely with families, support groups as well as medical and allied health professionals.
